We
have two CEW events in the works. At Rutgers, we're having a teleconference
in three live locations (Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden campuses)
on "academic freedom and untenured faculty." We hope to
have Joan Scott, Steve Lieberstein, both of whom sit on the AAUP's
Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure, and who are familiar
with the contingent appointments statement. We also hope to get
Bob O'Neil (chair of the AAUP Special Committee on Academic Freedom
in Times of Crisis, and maybe a NJ Congressperson, Rush Holt who
was a physics professor, as well as a welcoming administrator in
addition to our AAUP spokepeople. It will be interactive at the
three locations statewide at one time to maximize participation.
Another
event in the works is more of a service conference being planned
statewide with the AFT which represents adjuncts at all the New
Jersey State Colleges and a few Community Colleges (Elaine Bobrove,
Camden County College, elbob5@comcast.net, Union County College
no contact person. Also see New
Jersey State Colleges Plans). The list of State colleges is
long - you can contact AFT staff person Debra Davis (davis@cnjscl.org)
or full-time faculty member Tony Balzano (abalzano@sussex.cc.nj.us)
for a list of colleges and contacts perhaps. The idea of the conference
is to thank the two legislators who sponsored recent successful
legislation that allows part-timers to buy into the state health
benefit plan at their own expense, and to provide other expert speakers
on topics such as pension, unemployment, etc. This program plan
grew out of what contingent faculty in the state felt was needed.
