Chula Vista—In an effort to reverse a decades-long trend of
employing temporary, part-time instructors, rather than full-time
tenured faculty, COCAL-California (Coalition of Contingent Academic
Labor) is sponsoring Campus Equity Week—a week of outreach
and educational activities planned for the week of Oct. 27 through
Nov. 1. A “Faculty and Student Issues in Higher Education”
Forum will take place Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, from 11 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
in Building 210-Room 214* at Southwestern College (SWC), 900 Otay
Lakes Road.
Campus Equity Week, isalso sponsored by California Part-Time Faculty
Association (CPFA), CTA/CCA (Community College Asscociation), FACCC
(Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges) and the
Southwestern College Education Association aims at spotlighting the
extensive use of temporary or contingent faculty in higher education.
The purpose of the higher education forum taking place atSouthwesternCollegewill
be to promote open communication among representatives of the State
Legislature, the community leaders and faculty from institutions of
higher education throughoutSan DiegoCounty. State Senator Dede Alpert,
39th District, will be the special guest at this event.
“It will be an opportunity for all parties to ask questions
and to express concerns regarding employment equity and security,
health benefits, and other issues, including current legislation which
will greatly affect the more than 39,000 part-time instructors and
the millions of students in California community colleges,”
said David Milroy, Southern Regional Representative for CPFA.
Several issues will be discussed at the two-hour forum, including
Increasing New Tenure-Track Hiring, Increasing Funding for Community
Colleges, the Part-Time Equity Funds, and Office Hours, Health Benefits,
and Unemployment Compensation. Similar events are being planned at
SDSU,PalomarCollegeand CSU San Marcos, as well as on college campuses
throughoutCalifornia, theUnited States,Mexico, andCanada.
Campus Equity Weekwill also educate the public and policy makers about
facts such as:
• 39,000 part-time instructors account for 43 percent of all
faculty appointments;
• Graduate assistants and full-time, contingent faculty—another
growing segment of the teaching profession—often work without
adequate compensation or the protections of academic freedom; and
• Only 40 percent of all faculty now working hold or are eligible
to hold full-time, tenured appointments.
