John
Mueller, a Connecticut State University-AAUP part-time member, teaches
in the Central Connecticut State University history department.
John and the CCSU-AAUP CEW committee plan activities focusing on
students and colleagues. A highly visible booth in the CCSU student
union, staffed by part-time members, will distribute information
on a variety of contingent faculty issues.
Office space for example; many part-time faculty rely on multiple
teaching assignments making it virtually impossible to spend time
after class and this combined with the lack of office space for
part-time faculty has a deleterious effect on student interaction.
The
current state budget crisis prompts renewed interest in job security,
pro-rata pay, health care, shared governance, and seniority procedures
for part-time members. CCSU part-time faculty are included in same
Collective Bargaining Agreement as the full-time faculty.
A
special CEW activity concerns a number of CCSU part-time faculty
selected for teaching honors last semester but who lost their jobs
and the official honors recognition due to the budget crisis. A
luncheon that honors the individual faculty for their teaching excellence
and highlights the inequities of the hiring process bring CCSU CEW
activities full circle.
